‘Tis the season to wrap up 2017, make big plans, set goals, and come up with inspirational resolutions for 2018.
If you’re like me, you’ve noticed people promoting solutions, talking about vision boards, asking what your ‘word of the year’ is, and offering calendars and systems to help you get organized and plan for 2018 so that you are set up for success.
Their solutions are great and fine and dandy for some people…
You’re just not those people.
Instead of being tempted by all of those promises, and bright shiny objects, let’s simplify things.
Here’s what I’m doing instead (and you can, too).
(and here’s a fun video I made for you explaining all of this.)
1. Wrap up 2017
To me, that means making any final sales, finishing up deliverables, and… seeing what you can do before the end of the year to lower your 2017 taxes.
Tax rules are changing next year. This article explains the changes well. 5 things to do before Jan. 1 to lower your tax bill
“The basic advice is: Do everything you can to load up on tax deductions in 2017. The tax rates are going down next year, so a deduction now is worth a lot more than it will be in 2018.”
If you’re a small business focused on cash flow, do what you can to pay for things you NEED in your business BEFORE the end of the year. Don’t buy stuff you don’t need just to get deductions. But if you can pre-pay for things you’ll use next year, and you have the money or credit to do so now, go for it.
HINT: If you know you want coaching support next year, schedule a free clarity call right now and let’s see what you need so that you can get that deduction in 2017.
2. Get clear about what you want in 2018
It’s okay if you don’t really know what you want. And if that’s the case, give yourself permission to NOT have a plan for the year.
We tend to think we need to have everything planned out but that’s like sprinting before you even know how to walk.
It’s okay to not have everything figured out.
Take a deep breath.
What’s one thing you want next year?
Start small, and build a little more each year.
HINT: If you need help figuring out what you want, schedule a free clarity call right now and let’s see what you need so that you can get more clear in 2018.
3. Get (slightly more) organized
That sounds so big.
If you’re just getting started out, make imperfection your best friend.
You’ll need to accept the fact that your accounting system, desk, file folders, sales process, bank accounts, onboarding process, and pretty much everything else, is a work-in-progress.
You remodel a house one project at a time.
Your business is full of projects and takes time to put together well.
And… it’s never really “done”.
So give yourself a hug, pick one thing you want to improve a little bit today, do that thing and start again tomorrow.
HINT: Take that one thing you want from #2 and put it on your calendar as a recurring appointment at a set date and time each day/week/month. Then take imperfect action toward that one thing.
4. Love Yourself More in 2018
Our mindsets are the #1 thing holding us back.
When our energy isn’t aligned with who we are and what we really want, our business suffers.
(Ever go to take one more bite when you’re full or have one last drink knowing that you shouldn’t, then ignore that inner wisdom, and regret it later? That’s what I’m talking about — that’s being out of alignment — and it stifles your business.)
Watch your language, protect your energy, listen to your gut, and treat yourself with more love and kindness than you ever have before.
HINT: If your mindset is holding you back, schedule a free clarity call right now and let’s figure out what’s blocking your success to clear the way for an awesome year.
5. Be of service
Invite everyone you know to work with you on some level.
Maybe that’s a free conversation…
…or a book you’ve written, a video you’ve made, a training you offer, a class, a workshop, a widget, a product, a service, or a system you’ve created to help them.
If you act like your business is a party and invite everyone to join you for some fun that will help them (or their friends) reach their goals, people will start showing up.
They will get results, you’ll be of service, and everyone wins.
HINT: If you aren’t sure what to offer them, or how you can best be of service, schedule a free clarity call right now and let’s find what lights you up so that you can start helping people on a deeper level.
